Area code 586 was created on October 1, 1999 as part of a three-way split of area code 810. It covers Macomb County, Michigan. In 1988, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) began studying how to handle the increasing demand for telephone service in the state. At the time, only area code 313 was split, and it was projected that the area code would be exhausted by 1992. The MPSC examined the possibility of splitting area code 313, but decided against it because it would have created too many overlay areas.

In 1995, the MPSC began studying again how to handle the increasing demand for telephone service. This time, they looked at splitting area code 313 and creating a new area code in the Metro Detroit area. They also looked at splitting area code 517 and creating a new area code in the Lansing area. However, they decided against splitting either area code because of the potential for confusion and the cost of implementing an area code split.

In 1998, the MPSC again began studying how to handle the increasing demand for telephone service. This time, they looked at splitting area code 313 and creating a new area code in the Metro Detroit area, and splitting area code 517 and creating a new area code in the Lansing area.
