Area code 804 is one of the original 86 area codes created by AT&T and Bell Labs in 1947. It covers the eastern third of Virginia, including the Richmond and Tidewater areas. 804 is a Virginia area code, one of the first three established in the Commonwealth in 1947. It originally served the entire eastern third of the state. In 1994, it was reduced to its current size when 757 was created for the Hampton Roads area. 804 is currently the only area code in Virginia with an all-digital switch.
