The 817 area code was originally created on July 12, 1997, and served most of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. At the time, the 214 and 972 area codes also served parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2013, the 214 and 972 area codes were split, and the 817 area code served the western portion of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

The 817 area code is expected to run out of numbers in 2019. In November 2016, the Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) approved an additional area code, 682, for the 817 area code. The 682 area code will serve the eastern portion of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

The 817 area code is the only area code in Texas that is not an overlay.
