Area code 910 was one of the original area codes established in 1947. It served the entire state of North Carolina. In 1995, area code 910 was split, and a new area code, 252, was created for the eastern half of the state. Today, area code 910 is used for the southeastern corner of the state, including the cities of Wilmington, Fayetteville, and Jacksonville. In the early days, all long-distance calls were handled by operators. Area code 910 was one of the original area codes with a 1-800 prefix. This allowed people to make long-distance calls without having to use an operator.

Today, there are more than 1.5 million people living in the 910 area code. The area code is expected to run out of numbers by 2020. A new area code, 984, is scheduled to be implemented in early 2020. This will give the 910 area code an additional 10 years of service.
